Dual degree EAFIT: Miami – Business Hub of the Americas: What did I learn?

Miami Business Hub of the Americas

“Florida International University is Miami’s public research university, focused on student success. FIU is ranked a top-50 innovative public university by U.S. News & World Report and a top-50 national public university by Washington Monthly. FIU is a top U.S. research university, with more than $200 million in annual expenditures. FIU ranks 15th in the nation among public universities for patent production, which drives innovation, and is one of the institutions that helps make Florida the top state for higher education. Today, FIU has two campuses and multiple centers, and supports artistic and cultural engagement.” (FIU Miami)

How does a dual degree usually work?

FIU’s Master of International Business (MIB) program is a dynamic, rigorous, and relevant program that takes an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to the current realities shaping global business. FIU’s highly ranked international business programs offer students the ability to gain the relevant skills sought after and needed by employers. The idea is that students can get two master’s degrees (EAFIT’s MIB and FIU’s MIB) in almost the same time that it takes to do one, so a student would complete 70% of the EAFIT program and then go to FIU and complete approximately 70% of their program (21 credits) which is usually completed in two semesters. After finishing the full program with FIU, students are eligible for the optional internship training which allows them to work for a year anywhere in the United States.

How many students take advantage of the OPT?

For the internship, there is a large number of companies that have relationships with FIU. In fact, more than 500 companies hire directly from FIU because they know that they will find high-quality candidates with international experience. About half of students are successful in finding OPT opportunities, as FIU provides all students with a variety of tools and connections.

What are the recommendations for students who want to start the double degree process?

For students who want to start in August, the application deadline is June 1 and for the spring semester, the deadline is October 1. FIU recommends international students to start the application earlier so that the FIU team can help you through the process.

How international is the program?

Usually half of the class is international with students from all around the world.

What will happen to the FIU’s MIB after COVID 19?

FIU is following what is called a high flexibility model and that means that they mostly have hybrid courses at the business school where students would be online one week and the next week, they can go to face-to-face classes always following the requirements of social distancing. FIU has also been implementing the remote instruction model in which students are in a virtual environment with the professor at the same time. The university expects the spring semester to be fully presential.
